Samsung Note 2 vs iPad Mini

Apple’s iPad Mini is finally official, but how does it stack up to the leading players in the small tablet (phablet) arena? To find out we’re comparing the newly announced device with one the most popular new releases: Samsung’s Galaxy Note 2.

Power
Apple’s iPad Mini is powered by a dual-core A5 chipset which promises excellent performance with relatively moderate power demands, and the device also offers 16, 32 or 64GB storage options, though no micro SD card slot is present, unsurprisingly. The Galaxy Note 2 however, benefits from Samsung’s ‘throw it all in’ ethos – with a lightning quick 1.6GHz quad-core CPU, Mali-400MP GPU, 2GB RAM, 16, 32 or 64GB of internal storage space and a slot for micro SD cards up to 64GB in capacity.

Display
Samsung’s Galaxy Note 2 features a superb 5.5-inch Super AMOLED screen which operates at a resolution of 720 x 1280 and features a pixel density of 267PPI. The display is responsive, colours are vivid and rich, and sunlight legibility is sound too – giving the device everything a user could want from a phablet. The iPad Mini sports a 7.9-inch LED-backlit IPS display which operates at a resolution of 768 x 1024 and sports a pixel density of 163PPI. In demonstrations the display appears to be very bright and responsive, with nice contrast - though how it performs in real-time remains to be seen.

Camera
The iPad Mini features a 5-megapixel primary camera and a VGA front-facing camera which is fine for FaceTime and video-calling use, but lacks the ability to do much besides. The Galaxy Note 2 however, features an 8-megapixel primary camera which benefits from autofocus, touch focus, LED flash, face & smile detection, image stabilisation and geo-tagging, and also captures 1080P video. The device also features a secondary 1.9-megapixel camera for video calling.
